glasnost_testGreat new tool from Google and some partners who have released a set of online tools to check if your ISP isĀ  blocking certain ports that P2P networks use or your whole connection is being throttled.

The tools which can be found on the project website Measurement Lab allow you to run a series of tests that checks your Internet connection with the below tools

  • Network Diagnostic ToolTest your connection speed and receive sophisticated diagnosis of problems limiting speed.
  • Glasnost – Test whether BitTorrent is being blocked or throttled.
  • Network Path and Application Diagnosis – Diagnose common problems that impact last-mile broadband networks.
  • DiffProbe (coming soon) -Determine whether an ISP is giving some traffic a lower priority than other traffic.
  • NANO (coming soon) -Determine whether an ISP is degrading the performance of a certain subset of users, applications, or destinations.

The severs are pretty full at the moment so you may have to wait until the small hours for a chance to access the new network checker. Its a great tool as more and more ISP’s in the UK are throttling connections as more and more people download data from Newsgroups and P2P networks like bitTorrent. Well worth checking out if you think your ISP is doing something to your account. Of course Im sure Google et al are collecting all this fantastic data:

In order to advance Internet research, all data collected through M-Lab may be made publicly accessible. By using one of the tools, you will generate and send some data back-and-forth with an M-Lab server. The tools collect data related to the particular communication “flows” generated by the tool. These client-server tests do not collect information about your other Internet traffic such as your emails, Web searches or any personally identifiable information, unless you affirmatively provide it in response to a specific request (such as a form that asks you to provide your email address as well).
