I think Hitwise is great tool that can provide valuable information within the online space. I tend to follow the Hitwise blog which always posts informative and current research based on current Internet usage. Came across a story by Robin Goad in regards to social media site traffic finally overtaking porn in terms of market share of visits here in the UK.
Hitwise provided this data to the BBC for a news story which is an intresting read which also contains some fantastic bits of informations such as:

The massive growth of Twiiter may have finally pushed the offical market share number for social media fianlly over porn but I think its important to understand that these figures are based on only the sites Hitwise measures and not the entire contents of the Internet. There must be millions more pronographic pages out there that are accesses by UK users and just not registered. As an overall view though it does show the quick growth of social media. In my opnion I dont even think we have seen the best of what social media can offer us, 2009 will be an intresitng year.
