A slight delay in continuing my 31 day blog challenge but here is task 7 – writing a list post. Linking to other site and sharing traffic and eventually any search engine love you site has built up in my opinion is good thing. Firstly sites that you link to are more likely to link back to you and therefore increase your own natural search engine performance. Secondary nobody knows how Google’s algorithm works so outbound linking may be one of the ways your own site gets rated. In fact SEOmoz.org and vandelaydesign.com go into more depth on the topic of beneficial outward linking, both well worth reading.
There are many different types of link post you can create, Darren goes over them in detail here. I’ve given a brief summary of them below.
Building upon other peoples points.
This is a good way of creating content for your blog and expanding on what other people’s view. This typically sees you adding your views to someone else’s view whilst linking back to them and other related content. You can squeeze lots of outbound links into this type of article so it’s a great way to grow your blog.
Take the opposite view of other bloggers
This method is always likely to stir up some response, disagreeing with people and sharing your own views will generally attract other sites to link to your view and encourage commenting. If you create this kind of post it’s a good idea to either email the author of the post you are disagreeing with and letting them know you have added your own views. Just try not to offend anyone.
Build up a resource post
This is a quick and easy way of generating content but also letting people in your niche know that your site exists. Creating a list of resource URL’s on a particular subject is always a good idea and will generally do very well on social sites such as Digg.com etc
Speed linking
Everyone tends to read a good amount of online articles each day. I personally must read up to 30 articles so linking to 7 or 8 of these will help you generate a good number of links. If you do these once each day over the course of a day with a couple of comments next to each post you’ve created 365 new blog posts.
Interviews
I like the idea of interviewing people online, a series of 10 questions and willing people can produce a vast amount of traffic. Contact people with authority in your niche as most will allow themselves to be interviewed for self promotion purposes. This is something I’ll aim to do on this site. Again this is good content that will be unique to your blog but also attract lots of incoming links if the person being interviewed is well respected.
Further reading and suggestions
Had a thought about something? Let other people know what you are thinking but ensure you link to people that have had the same thoughts.
As for my outbound linking for the day I’m going to suggest you read these articles. I’ll aim to start doing this on a daily basis, makes perfect sense to and the evidence is there to show how it works.
