My article on the Abbey iPhone app was the most popular in 2009 and I notice that the majority of searches are coming in from people looking for a HBSC iPhone application. Both HSBC and Abbey are still yet to release an application for customers to check their balances, statements or move money.
I did however see the other day that NatWest have release an application for the iPhone that lets their customers do everything mentioned above. I have to congratulate NatWest for this as it’s obvious they have a close eye on the UK market and what people are demanding.
You can find more information on the NatWest iPhone application here it contains the below features:
- Monitor your current account with up-to-the-minute balance checks
- View a mini-statement with your last six transactions anytime, anywhere
- Set up and manage text alert services including:
- Balance updates – get your account balance sent to your iPhone once a week, on a day and time that suits you
- Limit alerts – receive texts when your account hits upper and lower limits that you control. Use them to know when you’ve been paid or are about to go overdrawn.
- Top up your pay as you go mobile phone and up to four others (service not available on 3 network)
Let’s just hope Abbey and HSBC plus the other banks aren’t too far behind and get something released quickly. Believe me the customer demand is there.

Yeah HSBC should really release something soon
I’m sure it won’t be long either banks in America have been doing this for ages so the UK in traditional form will follow up the rear.
As always uk always lagging behind, rather than keep kicking them up the arse to get what was out amercia ages a go, i give up and am gonna emigrate to amercia
Totally agree :)
I completely agree. How long do we have to wait?
Well hopefully now Santander are looking after Abbey we should see something soon. Consider the iPad was released today I’m sure all banks will jump on the bandwagon soon enough.
i would pay hsbc significant amounts of money for that app!
They are taking their time. I would have thought that the iPad release would speed things up.
I want this badly, I don’t want to go to Natwest as they’ve messed me about in the past, but this is really tempting. I too would be willing to pay at least a £5 for an app like this from HSBC, maybe more if there were some significantly innovative and useful extra features.
I sent emails to both HSBC’s online banking support desk and Monilink (who make the Natwest app) to ask them about an HSBC iPhone app.
HSBC told me to use the Monilink download instructions on their website. I emailed to explain once again that this does not work with the iPhone. They then said the service is only available for HSBC business customers (how would the app store differentiate?). They seemed to be clueless as to what an iPhone app was.
Monilink didn’t respond to my email.
Very frustrating
I’m actually considering a move to Natwest if they don’t pull their finger out
yah. they should have app so can just log in the phone and not use the token for the security code.
Mobank on the App Store allows you to assess your HSBC account and Balance and Transaction check easily. Not perfect, but getting better, set up by the guy who did First Direct and Mint! It works for me.
